The terms "democracy" and "republic" are not on the same axis.
"Republic" defines the origin of sovereign power (the individual citizens). The Soviet Union was also a republic, but was not democratic.
"Democracy" describes how that power is exercised (through voting). Technically we're a representative democracy but that is still a type of democracy. The UK is also a representative democracy, but they are not a republic.
