The term gatekeeping gets thrown around so much now that I feel like ive forgotten what it even means. What they are doing is having rules. All communities above a certain size need rules to maintain structure. Idk if that is or isnt gatekeeping, but it is definitely using rules to maintain their identity.
The Mercor, micro1, Outlier, DataAnnotation, etc, listings are obviously fake, because when you see them on LinkedIn it's always in waves. When you come across one there is 30+ others exactly like it on the next few pages. I am more interested in seeing if all of listings by more real companies were actually hiring people in their funnel.
With regards to AI training, It's pretty saddening how many companies ("companies"?) ask me to have a video chat with an AI as a first interview. There isn't a world where I can have a serious verbal conversation with a computer. Job searching is truly miserable right now.
There is no such thing. There is just more thorough and less thorough bit-blending. Have a look at any symmetric encryption algorithm or secure hash - there's no magic there, they just do a bunch of stuff to thoroughly mix up all the bits. In the case of symmetric encryption, they constrain it to reversible mixing primitives. And cryptographic experience has shown how much mixing is enough mixing.
A few basic things are known - for example, you can't make a symmetric cipher with just bitshifts and XOR, because then linear algebra techniques can trivially reverse it.
If the underlying prompt of the model stays the same, it seems to me that LLMs will always have common tells unless overridden with a thorough prompt from the end user. It's like if you had 1 person write half of the content on the internet. You'd probably get pretty good at noticing their writing style.
Maybe my understanding of LLMs is wrong, but it seems obvious to me that when you have a large corpus of LLM output you will eventually notice common tells when everyone is using the same models, weights, and base prompt.
There may be a single feed, but it’s definitely a bunch of “disconnected communities”. That’s why half the people think HN is pro-AI and the other half thinks it’s anti-AI. Everyone gets the same feed but interact with different content on that feed and come to completely different conclusions.
Those are different individual values, not different communities. All of the conversation is co-mingled in the same threads that everyone sees. Everyone is expected to follow HN rules. 1 person can be a part of multiple communities.
An example of different communities would be subreddits. Reddit as a whole connects all of the communities with a front page, but each community is isolated from one another unless you choose to look over or someone else chooses to look into your community. Cross-community conversation happens from the overlap of subreddits followed between individuals.

I don't have a good argument for it, but I also don't really care that it happened? Only a few decades ago we had phone books with every person's name and number in them. Housing information is already generally public data. It's an overblown issue that news sources that have been against Mamdani even before he became mayor have latched onto as a scare tactic for their audience base. Relative to things going on in politics right now I'd call it nothing-burger. Relative to my ideals I'd call it a minor miss-step.

Keeping people feed is a top 3 priority in any society. Without hard numbers, I can't really say anything more than that?
Basically... if this is Socialist politicians destroying the country, then capitalist politicians already put the country in the grave. And I don't live in NYC, so I care a lot more about the national stage.
